558 | March 26, 1908 Williamson County Sun, Georgetown, TX. Mrs. V.J Lemond Mrs. V.J. Lemond, a venerable lady who has been gradually failing in health for the past three years, passed away Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B.W. Landrum, in this city. The funeral services were conducted from the Landrum residence Tuesday morning by Rev. Jno. M. Barcus and the remains were taken to the Berry's Creek cemetery for interment. From a member of the family the Sun obtains the following details of her life and last days. Mrs. Lemond was one of the pioneer women of Texas. She was born in Waynesboro, Wayne County, Texas (sic - should be TN), March 13, 1824, and at the age of 12 years was brought by her parents to Texas, they locating in San Augustine County. Her father, Thos F. Edwards, was killed by the Indians near Rutersville, and one of her brothers, Lon Edwards was a Mier prisoner, whose life was saved by drawing a white bean when the ill-fated band of Texas was decimated by the Mexicans. She was married to O.C. Hurt in Polk county, Texas in 1843, and he dying, she married Judge Lemond in Gonzales county in 1867, they locating on a farm on the Florence road four miles out from Georgetown, whence they moved the next year to a place on the Corn Hill road, on which she made her home and which she occupied except when visiting her children. Hers was a beautiful Christian character, she having united with the Methodist Church at the age of 16 years, and during her long life she made daily exemplification of her abiding faith in Christ and His promises. One of her favorite texts was "She will do him good and not evil all the days o her life," and often during her sickness as as her nurse, Miss Rosalie Honey, and others sang to her, she would show her appreciation by a sweet smile. Only a day or two before her death her daughter sang "The Wayworn Traveler." one of her favorite songs and she said, "I'm going home." "There is no death, The stars go down, To rise upon some fairer shore, And bright in Heaven's jeweled Crown, Will shine forever more." She left three sons; L.F. Hurt of Granger, J.W. Hurt of Berry's Creek and J.N. Lemond of Lynn county; and three daughters, Mrs. B.R. Ellison of Fredonia, Mrs. H.W. Landrum of Georgetown and Mrs. G.T. Hollabaugh of Florence; a number of grandchildren and other relatives and many friends to mourn their loss, which they realize is her gain. * * * * On 17 Dec 2011 Mr. Thomas R. McKee sent an email in which he stated that Virginia was actually born in Wayne County, Tennessee, rather than Texas. | Edwards, Virginia Jane (I6749)

563 | Marriage Ceremony performed by George W Baines, Jr. _______________________________________________________________________ From the Valdo James Smith Research document, The Sudburys of Virginia and Tennessee. ROBERT J. SUDBURY was born on June 5, 1856 in Dyer County, Tennessee. On November 28, 1877, shortly after he and his parents moved from Tennessee to Milam County, Texas, he married LAURA TALLULAH E. FOSTER. The cere -mony was performed by George W. Baines, Jr. Laura had been born on September 12, 1859, in Georgia (probably in the town of Morgan in Calhoun County), according to her great-grandson, Glenn Boyd. Her parents were SAMUEL L. FOSTER and ELIZABETH SHEPPARD. Census records from 1860 show Laura, at the age of almost one year, living with her family in Morgan, Georgia, where her parents were running an inn. In 1870, Laura's family was still living in Morgan, but her father had given up inkeeping and had become a farmer. Glenn Boyd's best estimate is that Laura's family moved from Georgia to Milam County, Texas sometime between 1770 and 1774. After his marriage to Laura in 1877, Robert probably helped his father, John B. Sudbury, farm John's land in Milam County. Following John's death, which apparently occurred in 1888, Robert purchased the inherited interests of each of his brothers and sisters in John's land for the sum of fifty dollars, and it became his own. The deed evidencing this purchase is an interesting document, which can still be photocopied in the Milam County courthouse in Cameron. A description of the land Robert acquired under this deed can be found in entry number 1612, above, for John B. Sudbury. Unfortunately, Robert did not live to farm his new land for very long. He died on July 18, 1891, presumably in Milam County, of unknown causes. His burial site is also unknown to us today, though he may possibly be resting in an unmarked grave in the Sandy Creek Cemetery, near Rockdale. Laura survived her husband by almost four decades. Glenn Boyd gives the following additional information about her later years: Laura was known to use a cane during the last years of her life. She would visit each of her children for a few weeks in turn. Laura suffered from dropsy, an old term for diabetes. At least one of her children and several grandchildren developed the disease, possibly inherited from Laura. Laura died on March 17, 1927, and is buried in the city cemetery of Thornton, Texas. The grave site is marked by a small curved stone. _______________________________________________________________________ | Sudbury, Robert Jackson (I3895)

572 | Married by Albert Brown, Travis County Book 2, Page 408. They lived at Waldo, McLennan County, three miles north of Oglesby, one mile east of Coryell Church. They owned 1,025 acres. As of the writing of the historical piece in the McLennan County History (about 1892?), they were the parents of 10 children, 7 living: James M., Lulu B., J.R., W.A., Ollie Lee, Frank B. and Ethel. One descendant told me she died while visiting her sister Sarah Etter in Crawford, but another said she died on a train traveling between Tolbert and Gatesville and that she lived in Vernon. One descendant said Mollie was short, heavy set, very quiet, loved her children and was well loved, had black hair, black eyes. Said Mollie told stories of Indians killing children in a schoolhouse in Tennessee. Two of Mollie's daughters died of diptheria and typhoid. From History of Coryell County: "W.J.G. McIlhaney and his wife Mollie Carter came to Texas in 1853**. He was born in Tippah County, Mississippi on May 8, 1839. She was born in Mississippi in September of 1844. James McIlhaney, his father settled with him on Rainey Creek, and they lived out their years untl his death on July 30, 1904 and his wife died in October 1911. Both of them are buried at the Coryell Church Cemetery in the family plot. Of this marriage were ten children, and seven of them lived to be grown. James, Cordia, J.R., W.A. Ollie Lee, Frank B., and Ethel, and W.J.G. W.J.G. spent some time in the Texas militia. He was a member of the company that disbanded the U.S. troops at Camp Colorado in Coleman County. Then he served under Captain Hartgraves company in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1861. He was in the hospital for three months and was discharged and he returned to Coryell County. W.J.G. and his wife took great interest in church affairs. He was a deacon on the board when the church building was being built in 1888. The building was built of cypress --money was scarce. W.J.G. was sent as delegate to the Sunday School convention in Dallas, Texas. He served as a Justice of Peace. . . . W.J.G. ran a store in a place called Waldo. The old store building is gone now. ... W.J.G. owned property in Coryell and McLennan county before his death." [**The date was actually 1851. They did not marry in Mississippi. They married in Travis Co., TX.] | McIlhaney, William James Gibson (I7331)

575 | Mary "Mollie" Charlesann Elizabeth Carter was born in Tippah County, Mississippi. Her parents were James Carter and Salina Roxanna Dean. In 1851, the Carters moved to Webberville on the Colorado River in Travis County, Texas. That is where Mollie married William J.G. McIlhaney on Feb. 12, 1867. They were married by Albert Brown, and their marriage is recorded in Travis County Marriage Book 2, page 408. Soon after their marriage, Mollie and husband moved to Coryell County, Texas, where they spent the rest of their lives. All but three of their ten children grew to adulthood: Lula Belle 1870-1929, John Richardson 1873-1949, Anne Etta 1875-1876, William Arthur 1876-1960, Oliver Lee 1878-1956, Selena Jane 1880-1881, Frank B. 1881-1962, Ida Mae 1884-1886, and Ethel Elizabeth 1887-1960. Mollie and her husband were members of the Coryell Baptist Church, where her husband served as a deacon. He was also a Justice of the Peace. They owned 1,000+ acres in Coryell County and also ran a store in the Waldo community. Mollie's husband died in 1904. In 1910, she was living with her daughter Lula Belle in Taylor County, Texas. During her widowhood, she may also have lived with her sons John R. and Ollie in Wilbarger County, Texas. She passed away on October 23, 1911. There is no death record, and there are differing stories regarding where she died. One says she was visiting her sister Sarah Etter Summers in Crawford, Texas. Another says she was traveling on a train between Tolbert and Gatesville when she died. One granddaughter said that Mollie spoke happily of childhood Christmases spent at Bastrop, Texas (near Webberville) in the 1850s and 1860s. She said Mollie was a quiet woman who loved her children and who was well loved. | Carter, Mary Charlesann Elizabeth (I8272)
