    Esteline is locate 15 mile north of Childress Texas. To find Esteline cemetery take the first left exit coming into Estine from the south. Proceed one block to Wright street and take a left. Follow this dirt road until you see the cemetery on the left.

    Elizabeth Jane Boykin is buried in the Esteline Cemetery in a small cement block enclosure at far end of the cemetery. There are no other enclosures like it. On one side are two iron signs. One says Boykin and the other says Wheeler. At the far end of the enclosure is Elizabeth's son-in-law, Leander Thomas Wheeler, and next to him is her daughter, Lillie Mae Wheeler, and closest to the entry on the right side is Elizabeth's headstone at 34°31'57.11"N and 100°26'27.61"W.

THE STATE OF TEXAS County of DeWitt +States that the petitioner is Mrs. Eliza Jane Boykin and that she is a resident of DeWitt County and that she is the widow of W.J. Boykin who was a Confederate Soldier.
    +States that she was 60 years old Feb 2nd, 1902.
    +States that she had lived about 12 years in the County. Davy, DeWitt County, Texas.
    +States that her occupation was Housewife, but was not able to work.

I further certify that after considering all of the proceedings had before me relative to the said application for a pension by the said Mrs. Eliza Jane Boykin as widow of W.J. Boykin, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas, and whose file number was 9002 and whose original county was Dewitt. The said pensioner, Mrs. Eliza J. Boykin, died on the 21st day of February, 1933, near the town of Estelline, County of Hall, Texas. The pensioner died in the home of Lee Wheeler who was related to the pensioner as Son-in- Law. That the warrant, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the funeral expenses incurred by the said pensioner, Mrs. Eliza J. Boykin. I further certify that the warrant for the current quarter has not been cashed by the pensioner, to best of my knowledge and belief. I am related to the pensioner as (Friend) Son-in-Law, that my post office address is Estelline, Texas.

    ...Elizabeth Jane Criswell married William Joseph Boykin. She handwove and dyed a plaid shirt shown in a daguerrotype for her husband W.J. Boykin. She had never worked in her life as she had previously lived on a plantation in Fayette County close to Flatonia, Texas. When the slaves were freed she proved to be a capable worker and an outstanding manager. The plantation was sold for 25 cents per acre. One of descendants remained in Flatonia in the 1940's and 1950's. He was Dr. Leslie Wheeler.

    Joseph Boykin. In 1886, the family was living in Elmendorf, Bexar Co.,
    Texas where he farmed cotton. A daughter, Callie Boykin, wrote in 1886

    William Melton Criswell, b. Aug. 1, 1849 in Black Jack Springs,
    Fayette Co., Texas, m. Nov. 1, 1871 to Martha L. (Nellie) Warwick in
    Bastrop Co., Texas. Numerous letters from him between 1879-82 - he had
    some cattle, but seemed to be primarily an itinerant horse trader; two
    letters indicate some trouble with the law. He was assinated in Comfort
    Texas by a "man named Kelly" on Oct. 28, 1882. The widow wrote
    they "only charged the Irishman with manslaughter".

    Henry Elias Criswell, b. March 22, 1851 in Black Jack Springs,
    Fayette Co., Texas, m. April 13, 1871 to Mary E. Riffer (Rief) in
    Gonzales Co. He lived in De Witt Co., both in the Terryville Community
    and in Yoakum for nearly fifty years, and was the first Marshall of
    Yoakum. He held that job nearly twenty years and was elected Justice
    of the Peace, a position he held until his death in March 1922. The
    city of Yoakum named one of its streets in his honor. He died as a
    result of blood poisoning after having pricked his finger with an ice
    pick. His three children who survived him were W. H. Criswell, Mrs. B.
    0. Townsend and Mrs. J. D. Perkins.

    Fayette Co., Texas. Upon the death of his parents, when he was about
    13 or 14 years of age, he learned that his brother-in-law, Bill Boykin,
    was to be an administrator of his father's estate; "not liking old Bill
    Boykin worth a dam", he saddled his horse and left. "Went up the trail
    to North Dakota". Later he returned, married Melletta Jane Hester on
    March 14, 1872 in De Witt Co., Texas. In August 1883, he was living in

    Johnson City, Blanco Co., Texas where he was engaged in farming. (He
    had, in fact, just won a $20 premium for bringing in the first bale of
    cotton for the season.) His letter states that he is thinking of
    moving to Kimble Co. He died on Feb. 22, 1952, in Corpus Christi,
    Texas eight months before his 100th birthdate.

    Thomas Menefee Criswell, b. Nov. 5, 1856 in Fayette Co., Texas.
    He never married, but had "followed the trail" (the old cattle trails)
    by the time he was 21; he was later responsible for running the
    Driskill ranches in Kansas, the Dakota territory, Indian territory and
    Montana. Numerous letters written between 1880-85 which still exist,
    give a fascinating look at the old cattle empires and how they
    operated. In 1885, his brother, Lee, wrote brother David Robert to
    "come get Tom as he is in a bad fix". He died in his brother's home in
    Buckholts, Milam Co., Texas on April 12, 1886.

    Crioswell Family Among Early Settlers and Heroes of Texas History
    David Robert Criswell, b. Oct. 18, 1858 in Fayette Co., Texas near
    the present day town of Flatonia. He was about 7 years of age when his
    parents died and was taken into the home of his brother-in-law, Bill
    Boykin. He "hit the cattle trails" at an early age and by the time he
    was 17, was a "trail boss" driving cattle from the Mesquite ranges of
    Southwest Texas. He worked for the Driskill range properties gathering
    large herds at Gonzales, on Padre Island and other points before
    driving them north to Colorado for delivery to markets. At the age of
    22, in the year 1880, received a "Life Scholarship" from Jones
    Commercial College, Austin, Texas upon the completion of a prescribed
    business course. He married Sophronia Isabelle Secrest (Belle) on

    CRISWELL FAMILY
    April 14, 1881. She was the seventh child of Thomas Secrest and Maria
    Dismuke Secrest who migrated to Texas from Ohio and settled in Fayette
    Co. on Mulberry Creek near the present day Schulenberg, Texas. After
    their first child was born they moved north to Milam County in 1883,
    settling on a farm and ranch land on Lapan Creek. He taught school in
    Milam County for a number of years, among his first schools at North
    Elm to which he rode six miles horseback each way. He was also a land
    surveyor and in 1902 he was admitted to the Bar of Texas and practiced
    law at Buckholts, Texas. He served continuously as Justice of the
    Peace for Precinct 6 at Buckholts, Texas for a half century. Six
    children were born to Sophronia Isabelle (Belle) and David Robert
    Criswell:
