1917, Buck lived at 709 Orient in San Angelo, occupation: taxidermist. Business address 411 S. or E. Oakes, where sons Jeff and Harvey lived.
1920 census names J. Buck Carter living at 710(?) Jefferson St., Wichita Falls, with wife Martha (age 53), his occupation: laborer for Katy Road House (ed81, sheet1, line 44). Four other families living at same address.
Was told by his descendants that Buck's first wife Sarah worked hard in the farm fields. When she died in 1901, Buck left his children in the care of Sarah's family (the Kirby's). The sons worked at various farms in the area. Sarah's sisters Talona and Lucy may have been involved in rearing Sarah's children, and consequently Sarah's children were closer to the Kirby's than to the Carters.
Buck lost an ear due to cancer. He died while living in the "poor house" in Wichita Falls. He is buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Wichita Falls, TX.

Helen Frances "Granny" Powell, 89, died Oct. 10, 2007, in Haviland. She was born May 20, 1918, to O.C. and Nettie Mae Buttram Carter in Imperial Valley, Calif. She attended school and graduated from Victor Valley High School. After graduation she attended beauty school for a year. She married Earl E. Powell Oct. 28, 1939, in Las Vegas. He died July 1, 1982. She worked for a time for Marty Stevens Drapery Shop and then as head custodian for Hooker High School until 1983. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Hooker, Okla. She was an avid lover of crocheting and sewing. She liked doing word puzzles. She is survived by one daughter, Susan Lothman and husband, Dale, Haviland; two grandchildren, Ty Lothman and wife, Mary, Haviland, and Kendal Lothman and wife, Lorena, Haviland; nine great-grandchildren, Finice McCarley and wife, Jennifer, Tyler McCarley, Pake Mc- Carley and wife, Andy, Cody Lothman, Rance Lothman, Roy Lothman, Wyatt Lothman, Brayden Lothman, and Boyd Lothman; one brother, Bob Carter, Victorville, Calif.; and two sisters, Lola Gibbs and husband, John, San Bernardino, Calif., and Betty King, Victorville. She was also preceded in death by her parents; twins, Darlene and Darwin; one grandson, Wade; three brothers, Alfred "Punkin" Carter, John Carter, and Gerald "Hap" Carter; and two sisters, Lilian "Tee" Hillwig and Ella Mae Judd.

LOVING HUSBAND FATHER & GRANDFATHER

Gerald Carter, 80, of Susanville died on Monday, May 20, 2002, in a Stockton hospital following a sudden illness. He was a native of Westmoreland, Calif. He has resided in Susanville for the past 34 years and has also lived in Victorville, Oro Grande and Helendale, Calif. Carter was employed by the Victor Valley Union High School District for 25 years and the Lassen Union High School District. He retired after 15 years as a transportation supervisor. He was a graduate of Victor Valley Union High School class of 1939, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Carter served as the first president of the C.S.E.A in Victorville. He enjoyed fishing and taking trips with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Lorraine Fisher in 1990, a brother, Alfred Monroe Carter, and a sister, Lillian Hillwig. He is survived by his wife, Rosalind Carter of Susanville, who he married August 30, 1941. He is also survived by his son, Willis Leroy Carter of Sacramento, daughter, Linda Ann Hayn of Stockton, four sisters; Helen Powell of Kansas, Ella Mae Judd of Kentucky, Lola Christine Gibbs of San Bernardino and Betty Jean King of Victorville, two brothers; John Carter of Hesperia and Bobby Lee Carter of Victorville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery in Susanville with Chaplain James F. Fisher, Jr. officiating.
