...Grandmother (Ruth Lydia) had a large cedar chest on her screened porch at her home in Goliad. Therein she stored items of importance to her: the flag used to cover her son Jack's coffin, and uniforms from her sons and her brother Nolan. Uncle Nolan's Army uniform shirts were Olive in color and made of wool. The sleeves had extra material in the cuffs so that when the cuff was buttoned, nothing could enter through the slit. I was told that this was designed to keep the Mustard Gas off skin.
I remember going to see Uncle Nolan at the Veteran's Hospital in Waco. I don't remember the year, but it must have been the late 50s. He was quite handy with his hands and skilled at building things of wood. My sister has the small chair he made for her and I still have a wooden scrapbook he made. I was told that Uncle Nolan had been gassed during the War and had trouble breathing, so that was why he was in the V.A. Hospital.

...My paternal grandmother, Ruth Lydia BOYKIN Calhoun, was a Spanish teacher and Librarian at Goliad High School. Whenever I stayed with her and Granddad, I never minded going with her to school, as I had full run of the library. Reading was encouraged, and I am still an avid reader. I believe she got her degree in 1951 from Southwest Texas State. She was a hard worker and enjoyed teaching. I suspect she was a tough taskmaster!
...Grandmother had several old photo albums and I remember a photo of a fellow standing next to a Saquaro cactus with a six-shooter on his hip. I was told that this was the Boykin that lived in Arizona and that he had searched for and discovered Molybdenum in the area and that this discovery aided the war (WWI) effort. Molybdenum is used as an alloying agent in Steel. I don't know this man's name or exactly how he is related, but he was definitely a Boykin. As a note of interest, there is a Kippi Boykin who is a champion pistol shooter who lives in Arizona. She might be a shirt-tail relative.
