    Sir John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow was born on 19 June 1779.1 He was the son of Sir Brownlow Cust, 1st Baron Brownlow of Belton and Frances Bankes.1 He married, firstly, Sophia Hume, daughter of Sir Abraham Hume, 2nd Bt. and Lady Amelia Egerton, on 24 July 1810 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England.1 He married, secondly, Caroline Fludyer, daughter of George Fludyer and Lady Mary Fane, on 22 September 1818 at Ayston, Rutland, England.1 He married, thirdly, Lady Emma Sophia Edgcumbe, daughter of Richard Edgcumbe, 2nd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Lady Sophia Hobart, on 17 July 1828 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England.1 He died on 15 September 1853 at age 74 at Belton, Lincolnshire, England.1 His will was probated in November 1853.1
    Sir John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow was educated at Eton College, Eton, Berkshire, England.1 He matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1797.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1801 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 7 May 1801.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Clitheroe between 1802 and 1807.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 2 May 1805.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Brownlow of Belton, co. Lincoln [G.B., 1776] on 25 December 1807.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire between 1809 and 1852.1 He was created 1st Earl Brownlow [U.K.] on 17 November 1815.1 He was created 1st Viscount Alford of Alford, co. Lincoln [U.K.] on 17 November 1815.1 He held the office of Recorder of Boston in 1820.1 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1834.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 10 June 1834.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, on 6 July 1835.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Archaeological Society between 1841 and 1849.1

    Notes for JOHN WILLIAM SPENCER CUST:
    ......formerly Lady Marian Margaret Compton (b. Rome, 1817), her father was Spencer Joshua Alwyne Compton (b. 1790), 2nd Marquis of Nothampton. She took the name Cust following her marriage to John Hume Cust (b. 1812), Viscount Alford and the 1st Earl Brownlow. After his father's death in 1851, her son John William Spencer Cust (b. 1842) became the 2nd Earl Brownlow.
    Lady Marian, was well known in society as an intellectual conversationalist and patron of the arts. In 1866 she wrote an illustrated Needlework as Art, and helped to establish the School of Art Needlework in 1872 of which Queen Victoria became a patron when the premises moved to South Kensington in 1875.
    The Brownlow residence at Ashridge lies in an estate of over three thousand acres situated near to Berkhamsted. It dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt in 1815 from an original monastery of the Order of Bonhommes. The estate belongs now to the National Trust and the house is a management college. The other Brownlow residence, Belton House near Grantham, is owned also by the National Trust and the house and grounds are open to the public.
