    Notes for ALICE SHERARD:
Dame Alice Brownlow of Belton had seven children, although only five daughters survived to adulthood. Her husband died in 1697 when the girls were s till young and it became Alice's mission to secure the best possible marriages. She was very successful: two married earls and one a duke. The t hi rd daughter, Margaret, died of smallpox a few days before her wedding to Lord Willoughby but Alice's match did not go to waste as Jane, the fourth daughter, took her place a few months later. The youngest daughter, Eleanor, married a cousin, as her mother had done so and so once again the estate remained in the family. (12) (BRITISH HISTORY Wk. 14 TUDOR MARRIAGES )
