According to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame genealogy reseach department William Joseph Boykin joined the Texas Rangers Oct 25, 1848 until December 8, 1848.
    In the book, The Texas Rangers: A Registry and History - on page 72, it states;
    Company H/McCulloch's Company
    Captian Henry E. McCulloch (October 25, 1847 - December 10, 1848)
Ranging District; Llano River country with headquarters at McCulloch's Station/Post McCulloch.

...Wm. J. Boykin served in the 6th company of Texas Rangers organized by Henry E. McCulloch. It was organized 5 May 1851 at Ft. Merrill, on the Nueces.
    Earlier enlistments are possible.
...In the 1850 Gonzales Co., TX census there is a Sion (spelled "Scion") Boykin b. 1806 In GA., listed with 8 children, the oldest of whom was William, b. 1829. Sion's wife was apparently dead, as she was not listed in the census. The oldest daughter was named "Mary" which in all probability was also her mother's name. The Texas Baptist and Herald, 5 Mar 1887, states in its Historical Series that the Church at Gonzales was organized 31 Jul 1847 with Richard D. Ellis, pastor, T.J. Pilgrim, clerk, and 7 other members, one of whom was Mary Boykin who I think was Sion's wife, although she could have been his dau. Mary, then 15. The Boykins came to Texas between 1844 when their youngest child was born in AL and Nov. 1850 when the census was taken. I have no proof, but I strongly believe that Wm. J. is this same Wm., b. 1829, son of Sion. Further, Eliza Jane and Wm. J. named their oldest child "Mary." Wm. J's dau., Lillie told me her father was b. 2 May 1829 near Macon, GA, but she did not know who his parents were.

WILLIAM JOSEPH BOYKIN, by William B. Bennett
...William Joseph Boykin served in the Confederate Army. His Confederate pension number was 1171. It is thought that at one time he was taken prisoner by the "Yankees" but because of the letters of 1862 and 1864 it is not clear when this could have been if indeed it happened (it is VERY doubtful - Jim Allen). He was a fine Christian gentleman who read his Bible daily. He descended from the famous Richard Lee family of Virginia but did not believe in boasting about his heritage (see this statement also attributed to Sion Lee Boykin - Jim Allen). His mother's surname was West (incorrect, she was Elizabeth E. Anderson - Jim Allen). His wife's Maiden name was Elizabeth Jane Criswell. Her father was Leroy Criswell who was discharged from the Texas Army in San Antonio during the period between the capture of that city by Texas forces and the fall of the Alamo. It is believed he rejoined the Army for the Battle of San Jacinto and was with "Deaf" Smith at the distruction of Vince's Bridge. The family home was near Flatonia, Texas. William Joseph Boykin's father was Sion Alfred (error, it was Sion Lee - Jim Allen) Boykin.
...(This information was obtained by his grand-daughter, Alma Lee BOYKIN Bennett, my mother. Her source of information is not known to me.)

    Bob (John Robert) Peavy notes

    On May 1828, Sion Lee Boykin b 1800-1806 & Elizabeth E Anderson b c 1810 (daughter of my wifes
's gggggparents Hezekiah Anderson d Mar 1826 & Alley ____ were m in Screven Co Ga by Lewis Malone Strickland J.P. In the Screven Co Ga Census of 1810, Sion and ? Elizabeth appear to have a son less than 5 years of age. On 25 Nov 1830, Alley, her son-in-law Sion and another son-in-law signed as surety for yet another son-in-law's administration of estate of Alley's? brother-in-law, James Anderson (whose heirs were apparently brothers and brothers-in-law). Sion was included in similar bond on 6 Dec 1830, but not on 10 Jan 1831. On 26 Feb 1831, Sion bouht a horse at the sale of the estate of James Anderson. In the division of Hezekiah's estate, Sion Boykin is listed as an heir on 8 Jul 1833, but not on 20 Sept 1833.

In his will of 17 Mar 1836 (Screven Co Ga Will Book 1 p 48), Ely Rushing b 1810-1820 names his brother-in-law Sion L Boykin as his executor (other heirs were his brother Michael J Rushing and sisters Mahala and Caroline).

Sion Lee Boykin does not appear in the Screven Co Ga Census of 1840. In addition to spelling variations Sion/Scion/Sihon, the name is misread as Lion/Leon. Sion Lee Boykin may be the natural son of the Selah/Celia Boykin b c 1970 who m c 1806-1807 George Mock b c 1785 (Sion was probably with George & Celia in 1820). On 14 Jun 1806, a Selah Boykin (?age 16) made a gift of a cow, a calf and a two year old heifer to her son Sihon Lee Boykin (at most six years old at the time). George Mock b c 1785 m c 1806 - 1807 a Selah/Celia Boykin b c 1790 (sister of my ggggfather), and they are ancestors of most of the Screven Co Ga Mocks. A couple of their grandsons were named Sion B Mock b c 1842 and Sion Mock household includes one young man b 1796 - 1802 ( I believe this man to be Sion Lee Boykin), two boys b 1808 -1810, and three boys and a girl b 1810-1820 George and Selah are known to have had five children, sons b 1808, 1811, 1815 and 1817 and a daughter b 1813.

In the 1850 Gonzales Co., TX census there is a Sion (spelled "Scion") Boykin b.

Note: Concerning the above. I also believe this Mary to be Sion's wife. His daughter Mary was married to William Pytus Tumlinson and had a child 28 Dec 1848 - this is only a "window" of five months. The Mary on the 1850 census was probably William J. Boykin's first wife (Sion's daug., Mary, was with her husband and child at this census), but she would only have been 15 in 1847 - Jim Allen.

BOYKIN BIOGRAPHIES: JOHN A. BOYKIN: FLORIDA PIONEER. HIS ANCESTORS & DESCENDANTS, by Walter Maxwell, Jr.
...It is my belief that Sion L. Boykin is the "unknown son" given in Max's book . The main evidence for this conclusion is TIME and PROXIMITY. Sion was of the the right age to be a sibling of the other two sons of Lodwick (John A. & Henry). There is more than adequate evidence that Sion was in the area of Lodwick and his father, John Drury Boykin, Sr. and the "connection" in Screven Co., GA. There is oral tradition that there was a "Tory" in our lineage. This could very well be John Drury Boykin, Sr. whose lands were confiscated, but returned at some time after the Revolutionary War. In addition, there are numerous "name links" to the other Boykins of this area. All this in itself is not conclusive, but since most other lines have been extensively researched, there are not that many viable possibilities available. The only other possibility known to this researcher is a possible son of Henry, son of John Drury and brother of Lodwick. Known references to Henry and his wife, "Miss Moore," state that no records are available to substantiate any theories along this line. Thus, until otherwise proven, I will carry Sion Boykin as a son of Lodwick in the full belief that he truly was - Jim Allen. (Note: see new info about Selah Boykin above - Jim Allen)

...on 20 May 1828 Sion Lee Boykin b. 1800-1806 & Elizabeth E. Anderson b. c1810 (daughter of Hezekiah Anderson d. Mar 1826 and Alley __?__) were m. in Screven Co., GA by Lewis Malone Strickland, J.P.
...on 25 Nov 1830, Alley, her son-in-law Sion and another son-in-law signed as surety for yet another son-in-law's administration of the estate of Alley's brother-in-law, James Anderson (whose heirs were apparently brothers and brothers-in-law).
...Sion was included in a similar bond on 6 Dec 1830, but not on 10 Jan 1931. On 26 Feb 1831, Sion bought a horse at the sale of the estate of James Anderson.
...in the division of Hezekiah's estate, Sion Boykin is listed as an heir on 8 Jul 1833, but not on 20 Sep 1833!
...in his will of 17 Mar 1836 (Screven Co., GA Will Book 1, p. 48), Ely Rushing b. 1810-1820 names his brother-in-law Sion L. Boykin as his executor (other heirs were his brother Michael J. Rushing and sisters Mahala and Caroline).
...Sion Lee Boykin does not appear in the Screven Co., GA Census of 1840. In addition to spelling variations Sion/Scion/Sihon, the name is misread as Lion/Leon. Sion Lee Boykin may be the natural son of the Selah/Celia BOYKIN b. c1790 who m. c1806-07 George Mock b. c1785 (probably with George and Celia in 1820).

BOYKIN Screven Co GA, Liberty Co FL
...I do not know the parentage of Sion Lee Boykin b. 29 Jan 1806. I know of no other researchers who are pursuing this issue. The earliest mention of him that I know of, and perhapst the only Screven Co GA record that includes more than a middle initial) is a record of a gift from his mother, Selah Boykin, dated 14 Jun 1806 (Screven Co GA Deed Book A, p. 426 records a gift of cattle from Selah Boykin to her son Sihon Lee Boykin). That one deed record does not clarify whether Selah was a Boykin daughter or a Boykin wife or widow, but it is remarkable if for no other reason because of the age of the grantee and because it is the mother who is the grantor (and the mother may be quite young as well. Appears to have been about 16 - Jim Allen). John Boykin Sr's daughter, Selah/Celia Boykin (b. c1790) must have m. by 1807 George Mock (b. c1785). Their household in 1820 included a young man b. 1796-1802, two boys b. 1804-1810, and three boys and a girl b. 1810-1820. By 1820 George Mock and Selah are known to have had five children, sons b. 1808, 1811, 1815, & 1817 and a daughter b. 1813. George Mock & Selah Boykin also had a grandson named Sion B(oykin?) Mock b. c1842.

    Notes:

On 20 May 1828, Sion Lee BOYKIN b 1800-1806 & Elizabeth E. ANDERSON b c 1810 (daughter of my wife's ggggggparents Hezekiah ANDERSON d Mar 1826 & Alley _____) were married in Screven Co GA by Lewis Malone STRICKLAND J.P. In the Screven Co GA Census of 1830, Scion and ?Elizabeth appear to have a son less than five years of age. On 25 Nov 1830, Alley, her son-in-law Sion and another son-in-law signed as surety for yet another son-in-law's administration of the estate of Alley's ?brother-in-law, James ANDERSON (whose heirs were apparently brothers and brothers-in-law). Sion was included in a similar bond on 6 Dec 1830, but not on 10 Jan 1831. On 26 Feb 1831, Sion bought a horse at the sale of the estate of James ANDERSON. In the division of Hezekiah's estate, Sion BOYKIN is listed as an heir on 8 Jul 1833, but not on 20 Sep 1833!

In his will of 17 Mar 1836 (Screven Co GA Will Book 1 p 48), Ely RUSHING ?b 1810-1820 names his brother-in-law Sion L. BOYKIN as his executor (other heirs were his brother Michael J. RUSHING and sisters Mahala and Caroline).

Sion Lee BOYKIN does not appear in the Screven Co GA Census of 1840. In addition to spelling variations Sion/Scion/Sihon, the name is misread as Lion/Leon. Sion Lee BOYKIN may be the natural son of the Selah/Celia BOYKIN b c 1790 who m c 1806-1807 George MOCK b c 1785 (Sion was probably with George & Celia in 1820). On 14 Jun 1806, a Selah BOYKIN (?age 16) made a gift of a cow, a calf and a two-year old heifer to her son Sihon Lee BOYKIN (at most six years old at the time?). George MOCK b c 1785 m c 1806-1807 a Selah/Celia BOYKIN b c 1790 (sister of my ggggfather), and they are the ancestors of most of the Screven Co GA MOCKs. A couple of their grandsons were named Sion B. MOCK b c 1842 and Sion MOCK b c 1840 (may be one fellow who was double counted in the 1860 census). In the 1820 Census, the George and Selah MOCK household includes one young man b 1796-1802 (I believe this man to be Sion Lee BOYKIN), two boys b 1804-1810, and three boys and a girl b 1810-1820. By 1820 George and Selah are known to have had five children, sons b 1808, 1811, 1815 and 1817 and a daughter b 1813.

(Gene Brownlow) I believe Selah/Celia Boykin had a child, Scion Lee Boykiin, before she married George Mock. The records show Selah/Celia Boykin marred George Mock late in 1806 or 1807. About a year later they had their first child, Joseph Andrew Mock, in 1808. Scion "LEE" Boykin may have been the child of one of the Lee families that lived in Screven at the same time. There were two men in the same age range as Seah/Celia, Joshua Lee and a John Lee. John show to have a famliy in the 1830 cencus and Joshua shows to be living with an older lady, possibly his mother. This could account for Selah/Celia "Boykin" having a son she gave the last name of "Boykin" with a middle name of "LEE" which would have been his true father's last name. Note: in 2019 I found a David Lee jr. b 1787, which would have made him 3 years older than Selah. He was married to Mary Best and they had a son in 1807 which was less than a year after Scion Lee Boykin. It also shows his father David Lee was buried in Screven.

    Children:
    1. 2. Scion Lee Boykin was born on 29 Jan 1806 in Screven County, Georgia; died in Apr 1888 in Gonzales County, Texas.

...John Boykin, Sr. petitioned for land setting forth that he had been upward of seven years in the Province (of Georgia) and was desirous of obtaining land for cultivation in St. Matthew Parish to adjoin his father, Edward Boykin's land. This land was apparently already taken up as he later petitioned for 100 acres in St. Matthew Parish near to land ordered to Solomon Prothero. This was granted in Dec. 1771. In 1805, lands which had been taken in the banishment of John Boykin, Sr. of Screven County were returned to him and the banishment repealed by the Govoner of Georgia, John Milledge. This would indicate that John Boykin, Sr. was considered a Tory by the Legislature of Georgia but was reinstated to good graces after the war. John Boykin, Sr. married Sarah Tanner in the Jeruslem Church at Ebenezer, Effingham County, the Evangelical Luthern Church.

HE WAS EITHER DEAD, OR MOVED BY 1830 FOR HE DOESN'T APPEAR IN THE GA CENSUS INDEX. AS EARLY AS THE ENROLLMENTS (1803-4) FOR THE 1805 LOTTERY, WE FIND LODWICK, A MARRIED MAN, LIVING IN SCREVEN CO. ALSO THERE WERE JOHN, JOHN SR., ALL MARRIED, AND WITH LODWICK REGISTERED IN SEQUENCE!
There is a Francis in Green; a Francis, William and a widow Sarah with a minor child or children in Washington Co.; and William of Jefferson Co. (who won a prize!). All these Boykin individuals headed families containing either a wife and/or minor children in order to be entitled to 2 draws, as each was. Perhaps you need to begin with the probate and guardianship records of Screven Co., which are available at LDS Famiy History Centers about the country.

    Dear Jim ALLEN,

Stennis kindly forwarded your correspondence, so I thought that I
would go ahead and write this evening (we'll be out of town next week, and,
unlike you, I will not likely look at my e-mail until we get back home).

As I am sure that your are aware, our secondary sources list:

    (i) an elder Lodwick BOYKIN, son of John BOYKIN Sr & Sarah
TANNER m 1772 (dau of Lodwick TANNER)(Lodwick BOYKIN reported to have been b
c 1777, and reported to have m Ann MOCK; I do not know what became of this
elder Lodwick BOYKIN or whether he might have m more than once, and, other
than John BOYKIN Sr's will, I do not yet know the evidence on which much of
    this information is built), and

(ii) a younger Lodwick BOYKIN, son of John BOYKIN Jr &
    Catherine SHEPPARD (b 5 Feb 1805 d 8 Jan 1877 buried at Middle Ground
Baptist Church, m(1?) 26 Jan 1853 Screven Co GA m(1?) Caroline SOUTHWELL).
Note that this younger Lodwick (ii) did not marry until age almost 48. He
was living alone in Screven Co GA in 1850, reported as only 37 years old,
not 45, which by census record would imply b c 1813; his household in 1850
is near that of his parents John BOYKIN Jr age 78 & Catherine SHEPPARD age
    76.

The 1860 Liberty Co FL census data below (presented and forwarded by two
excellent researchers, one of whom gives us an outline of these early GA
    BOYKINs) presents us with:

    (iii) a third and youngest Lodwick BOYKIN b c 1815 GA (m
    Rebecca _____ b c 1832 AL), whose eldest child appears to be b c 1837 FL.

This FL record makes one suspicious that the elder Lodwick BOYKIN (or a
brother) might have fathered the third gentleman of that name in c 1815. I
would like to investigate the FL connections of the Tory leaning elder
BOYKINs (others, the COOKs and HODGES, and perhaps the MIZELLs, for example,
also returned from FL after the Revolution).

I do not know the parentage of Sion Lee BOYKIN b 29 Jan 1806. I
know of no other researches who are pursuing this issue. The earliest
mention of him that I know of, and perhaps the only Screven Co GA record
that includes more than a middle initial) is a record of a gift from his
mother, a Selah BOYKIN, dated 14 Jun 1806 (Screven Co GA Deed Book A p 426
records a gift of cattle from Selah BOYKIN to her son Sihon Lee BOYKIN).
That one deed record does not clarify whether Selah was a BOYKIN daughter or
a BOYKIN wife or widow, but it is remarkable if for no other reasons because
of the age of the grantee and because it is the mother who is the grantor
(and the mother may be quite young as well). John BOYKIN Sr's daughter,
    Selah/Celia BOYKIN (b c 1790) must have m by 1807 m George MOCK (b c 1785).
Their household in 1820 included a young man b 1796-1802, two boys b
1804-1810, and three boys and a girl b 1810-1820. By 1820 George and Selah
are known to have had five children, sons b 1808, 1811, 1815 and 1817 and a
daughter b 1813. George MOCK & Selah BOYKIN also had a grandson named Sion
    B. MOCK b c 1842.

The RUSHING connection is also of great interest. Sion Lee BOYKIN
is listed as an heir of his late father-in-law, Hezekiah ANDERSON on 8 Jul
1833, but not on 20 Sep 1833. The Screven Co GA Will of 17 Mar 1836 of Ely
RUSHING identifies his executor, Sion Lee BOYKIN, as a brother-in-law (and
brother Michael J. RUSHING, sisters Caroline RUSHING and Mahala RUSHING); it
does not identify the sister, Mary Ann RUSHING BOYKIN m c 1833. I notice
that this lady has a daughter Cela Rebecca BOYKIN b 1844.

My own BOYKIN ancestry is through Tobias BOYKIN (b 1802 m 1836) &
Asenith HODGES b 1814 (son of John BOYKIN Jr & Catherine SHEPPARD both of
Screven Co GA, dau of Nathaniel HODGES & Martha WHITTINGTON both of Bulloch
Co GA). My mother's maiden name is BOYKIN. Their marriage was listed twice
in Returns on Estates Book D (one date probably reflects the license date).

Although I am, as you say, in the middle of the area to do original
research, my opportunities to do so are somewhat limited by the necessity of
job and the joy of family. I will eventually get to the Sylvania Court
House to see the deed and will records that I mentioned and to search for
additional early BOYKIN records that will help resolve some of these issues
(an additional example of such an issue is that John BOYKIN Sr's other dau
Rhoda BOYKIN had a surname NEWTON when she m(2?) in 1823 m John R.
THOMPSON). Not all of the forwarded messages are likely to be of use to
you, I chose a few that may be; the less recent messges are also in need of
updating. Please let me have any additions or corrections that may be
convenient for you to make at this time.

May God Bless You and Your Family,

Hi Stennis,Thanks much for the information on John R. Peavy. I
surely do want to correspond with him!!! I'd like to have any info he has.
    He's
right in the middle of the area where he can do original research. Don't
let this return address throw you. I retreived your message with my son's
Yahoo and am sending from his address in Stevenville, TX. According to
William Joseph Boykin, Sion's son's pension record, they came to TX in 1847.
The first census was the 1850 Gonzales, "on the St. Marks (San Marcos)
River. I'll get into more depth when I get home next Tuesday, okay?
    Thanks again!!Jim
    >> Jim,I have started correspondence with John R. Peavy, Rincon,
GA. He had lost Sion in 1840. I sent him Sion's descendants that you were
kind enough to share with me. Peavy appears to be a sincere and thorough
researcher, and if you have no objections I will give him your Email address
in case he needs some more info that you might be able to provide. John
and other Screven Co. GA. researchers are uncertain of Sion's parentage,
although they lean toward the assumption that Sion was an illegitimate son
of Lodwick's sister, Sela Boykin. I don't think there is enough proof of
such that it would threaten our assertion that Sion was a child of Lodwick.
Of course I will continue to investigate. When did Scion first
appear in records in TX? He was not in the 1840 Screven Co., GA. Census.
You might have sent me that info, but I can't find it right now. He might
have stopped in Alabama or somewhere for a year or two on the way to Texas.

Hi Sharon - I checked my BOYKIN files and found a Lodowick and his wife Ann
MOCK - the end of that particular line as far as my files. Might be a
descendant of that one. Does anyone have information on this Lodowick and
