    Notes:

Thomas Ephraim Hunter was a son of Henry Jesse Hunter (b.1832 AL d.1885 TX) and Nancy Angeline Jeter (b.1834 GA d.1929 OK). The family was living in Union County, Arkansas when Thomas was born. Sometime before 1860, the family moved to the area of Marion, Union County, Louisiana. In 1862, Thomas' father enlisted in the 25th Louisiana Infantry of the Confederate Army. After the war, sometime before 1870, they moved to the Mount Pleasant area of Titus County, Texas. Sometime during the 1870s they moved to McLennan County, Texas.
Thomas married Amanda Roxanna Carter on Sept. 12, 1877 (license acquired in Coryell County). In September 1878, their only child, Artie Belle, was born (probably in McLennan County). From then on, Thomas E.'s and Amanda's story was linked with Artie. Artie married Thomas B. Thompson on Aug. 12, 1896 in McLennan County. Soon after, Thomas Hunter and wife accompanied Artie and her husband in a move to Van Zandt County, Texas. Amanda's sister Belle Carter Cary and husband Brook moved with them, as well as T.E.'s brother John R. Hunter.
Artie gave T.E. and Amanda two grandchildren in 1902 and 1905. Then, Artie became very ill. T.E. and Amanda moved with T.B. and Artie to Dallas about 1907 so that Artie could be near doctors. While there, in 1908, Artie had her last child. It became apparent Artie was not going to recover from her illness (pellagra). About 1910, Thos. E. and wife moved with Artie and T.B. to Caddo Mills in Hunt County. Artie died there in 1913.
Thos. E. and Amanda continued to live with T.B. Thompson and his children until Amanda herself died in 1917. Before her death, they had made yet another move to Branch in Collin County. After his wife's death, Thos. E. would go each year to West Texas to pick cotton and also to sell salve which he made himself.
He died April 18, 1928 in the home of his granddaughter Katrean.

McKinney Daily Courier Gazette 4-18-1928 pg.1
"THOMAS E. HUNTER PASSES AWAY HERE WEDNESDAY.

Hunter, 72 years old, passed away at 12:30 o'clock this [Wednesday] afternoon at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Clyde Lewis, 408 South Benge St. He had been in declining health for about four months. The deceased was on a visit in this city and had been the guest in the home of his granddaughter here abut a week prior to his demise. He came to McKinney on his last visit from Oklahoma City. Definite funeral arrangements had not been made at press hour today. However they will be held sometime tomorrow [Thursday] afternoon. His wife died about ten years ago near Branch in this county. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church. The body is being held at the Sam J. Massie & Son Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements."

Thomas married Amanda Roxanna Carter on 12 Sep 1877 in Coryell Co., TX.. Amanda (daughter of James Carter and Salina Roxanna Dean) was born in Feb 1852 in Webberville, Travis County, Texas; died in Sep 1917 in Collin County, Texas; was buried in Lowry Crossing, Collin County, Texas, United States of America. Notes:

Her exact birthdate is uncertain and varies from 1849-1852. I believe she is the daughter named Emily on the 1850 census. Amanda’s birthdate differs on every census. Per the 1900 Van Zandt County Census, her birthday was in February. Amanda and Thomas were married by Elder John McClain. Their marriage license was issued in Coryell County, Texas. It was filed 11-23-1877, in Coryell County Vol. D-1, Page 270, where T.E. is incorrectly named Hinton. On the 1880 Census, they lived next door to Amanda's parents in McLennan County, west of Crawford, where Tonk Creek crosses High Bridge Road near the Coryell County line. On December 2, 1891, they purchased three town lots on the east side of the Brazos (near the current IH35). On April 16, 1892 they sold the lots. After their daughter Artie’s marriage in 1896, they moved with their daughter and with Amanda’s sister Anna Belle to Van Zandt County. About 1907, they moved to Dallas because daughter Artie was very ill. About 1910 they moved to Caddo Mills in Hunt County. Daughter Artie died and is buried there. After that they moved to Branch in Collin County, where Amanda died in 1917. She is buried at Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Lowry Crossing, Collin County, Texas. Amanda and husband T.E. Hunter lived with their only child Artie from the time Artie married in 1896.

    Find a Grave
Amanda's year of birth is uncertain. Her headstone says 1852. However, she is a different age on every census. It is possible she was born about 1850 in Tippah County, Mississippi. If her birth was after 1851, she was born at Webberville in Travis County, Texas. She was a daughter of James Carter and wife Salina Roxanna Dean. Amanda married Thomas E. Hunter on September 12, 1877 in Coryell County, Texas. T.E. and Amanda had only one child, Artie Bell, born 1878 in McLennan County, Texas. Artie married T.B. Thompson in 1896 in McLennan County, and Amanda and T.E. moved with them to Van Zandt County, Texas about 1898. They lived with their married daughter throughout Artie's marriage and even after Artie's premature death in 1913. About 1907, they moved from Van Zandt County to Dallas, Texas to seek medical attention for Artie. When doctors could do no more for Artie, the family group moved to Caddo Mills in Hunt County, Texas, where Artie died and is buried. After Artie's death, T.B. Thompson and children, along with Amanda and T.E., moved to Collin County, Texas. Amanda never recovered from the loss of her daughter and is said to have died of grief four years later. Her month and day of death are not recorded, but may have been September. Her granddaughter Irma, who was 9 years old at the time, remembered riding to the cemetery in a wagon and said it was a rainy day.

James Carter and Salina Roxanna Dean married 4-27-1836 in Hardeman County, TN. Their first child Wm. Lafayette was born 1837 in Hardeman Co., TN., d.1906. By 1839 James and Salina had gone to Tippah Co., MS where they may have had a son John W. b.1839 d.1850. Also in Tippah Co. they had children Robert M. 1841-?; Mary "Mollie" Charlesann 1844-1911; Sarah Etter 1847-1921; and Emily, b.1849, d.bef.1860. In 1851, the Carters went to Webberville, Travis County, TX where they had the following children: Amanda Roxanna, b.1851-1852, d.1917; Anna Bell 1854-1925; James "Buck" 1856-1930; and Missie Lena 1859-1907. In the late 1860s, James and Salina moved to Waco. All of their grown children also moved to the general Waco area at about that same time. By 1880 James and Salina were living west of Crawford near Tonk Creek.

In 1851 they moved to Webberville, Travis Co. TX, on the Colorado River. at 30°13'51.76"N and 97°30'59.99"W. The 1851 date is supported by Travis County tax records and by a biography of the husband of one of their daughters in an 1892 book. The 1892 source also states that James Carter was a deputy sheriff in Webberville. About 1869 they moved to McLennan County. In 1870 they lived in the town of Waco. By 1880 they had moved southwest of Waco near the Coryell line. The specific community may have been known as Tonk Creek. Their property was just yards southwest of where Tonk Creek crosses High Bridge Road in western McLennan County.

NOTE: The two graves behind James and Salina's are those of their daughter-in-law Sarah Jane Kirby 1858-1901, wife of their son Buck, and Buck and Sarah's daughter Jessie Verdon 1887-1896. In this view, Sarah is on the left and Jessie on the right.

As noted from Find A Grave
James Carter's early life is as yet unknown. Per the census, he may have been born in North Carolina, South Carolina or Alabama. The 1880 census says he was born in NC and that his parents were born in Virginia. In 1836, Greenberry Carter was the bondsman on James' marriage record in Hardeman County, Tennessee (Note: Greenberry Carter was a son of Jesse Carter of Hardeman Co., Tenn. I do not believe Greenberry was James' father, since G.B. later named another son James. Also, G.B. was too young to have been married when James was born). James married Salina Roxanna Dean April 27, 1836 in Hardeman Co., Tenn. Their first child, William L. Carter, was born there in April 1837. By 1839 they had moved to Tippah County, Mississippi (Greenberry Carter also went to Tippah County). A child John W. Carter may have been born to James and Salina in 1839 in Tippah County. He died in 1850; do not know for certain that he was their child. Their next four children were born in Tippah County: Robert M. 1841, Mary "Mollie" Charlesann Elizabeth 1844, Sarah Etter 1847, and Emily b.1849-50, d.before 1860. In 1851, the Carters moved to Webberville on the Colorado River in Travis County, Texas, where James worked as a wagoner and also served as a deputy sheriff. His next four children were born in Webberville: Amanda Roxanna 1851-52, Anna Bell 1854, James Buchanan "Buck" 1856, and Missie Lena 1859. James' two oldest sons served in the Civil War. About 1869, the Carters (along with all their children) moved to Waco in McLennan County, Texas, where James worked as a wagoner. His daughter Mollie McIlhaney settled in Coryell County. By 1880, James and Salina had moved to a rural area west of Waco, where James farmed on land he owned near Tonk Creek. He passed away on July 15, 1892.
    NOTE:
I have never seen an instance where James Carter used a middle initial. He has been confused with a James M. Carter who also lived in Waco.

James married Salina Roxanna Dean on 27 Apr 1836 in Hardeman, Tennessee. Salina (daughter of Robert P Dean) was born on 1 Jun 1819 in Georgia, United States; died on 10 Mar 1903 in Osage, Coryell County, Texas Osage Cemetery; was buried in 1903 in Osage, Coryell, Texas, United States of America.
